Is That Your Best Poker Face?

When we look at the definition of the term ‘poker face,’ we know it means to ‘show a lack of expression.’  It is exactly this that poker players need to be able to master. It is often said that a poker face is an art form and a player’s poker face can even determine whether a game will be won or lost. So how do you put up your best poker face?

Relax: If you are relaxed, this will become apparent simply by looking at your face. Knowing how to relax is vital in many sports and in poker it is no different.

Emotions: If you find that you are on a winning streak, keep your emotions at check. Never display raw emotions or show that you are over excited. On the other hand, if you are losing at a game, again keep emotions in line and do not display anger or frustration. You will be giving essential clues to fellow players. A true professional player will not react to any small wins or losses.

Body language: You may think you have perfected your poker face, but you will probably slip up as soon as you begin to speak. If you are feeling tense or nervous this becomes clear through the tone in your voice. If your opponents pick up on this they are at a major advantage and it could be enough to lose you the game. It is crucial to learn how to control your breathing not to fidget and keep a straight eye.

Expression: In order to triumph at poker you need to be curb your emotions, for example display a vacant and cool expression, therefore nobody is able to read your mind. An empty facial expression can fool other players and confuse them as to how you will play. This may sound silly, but practice facial expressions in front of the mirror, many professional poker plays do just this.

Having said all of this you must remember not to be too conscious about keeping a poker face. If you do, you are more likely to draw attention to yourself and give the game way. Try and remain expressionless, like the best of the UK poker players.
